Calvin

  • Predestination: men are sinful and corrupt and God has already determined who will be saved (the Elect). There is no such thing as free will. Salvation could be identified by the virtue of their moral life and their economic success.
  • Unity of church and State: Unlike Luther, Calvin believed that Church shouldn't be ruled by the state. He creates a theocratic state
  • salvation based on faith alone
  • no one can have any fun, no card playing etc
  • Puritans in England, Presbyterians in Scotland, Huguenots in France
  • He wrote Institutes of the Christian Religion which allowed Calvinism (and Luther's ideas) to spread (because Luther never wrote a book explaining what he believed)
